The U & U Show 333 | New Wooden Wand & Arcade Fire

Wooden Wand & the World War IV : I Hate the Nightlife : Wooden Wand & the World War IV (2013)
-          2nd album of 2013.
-          Blood Oaths of the New Blues is still one of the year’s most impressive releases.

Willis Earl Beal : Comin' Through (feat. Cat Power) : Nobody Knows (2013)
-          2nd full length.
-          Debut was lo-fi, unflattering and didn't show off his insanely powerful voice.
-          Big time comparisons to Tom Waits.

The U & U Show 323! Okkervil River Returns

Okkervil River : It Was My Season : The Silver Gymnasium (2013)
-          7th album, first not on JagJaguwar. Jumped to ATO Records.
-          Led by Will Sheff
-          The Stage Names, was one of best albums to come out in the time I've been obsessing over music on this show.

Wyatt Blair : Money, Honey… : BANANA CREAM DREAM (2013)
-          Debut album.
-          Loose fun upbeat garage rock along the lines of King Tuff.
-          Another undeniably solid release from Burger Records.
-          This song samples the guitar riff from a classic big beat rock song, that I can't place.

The U & U Show 314! New Album of the Year Leader...

Kurt Vile : Shame Chamber : Wakin On A Pretty Daze (2013)
-          5th album.
-          Former guitarist for the War On Drugs.
-          The opening track on this album, 'Wakin on a Pretty Day,' might be the year's best so far.
-          He said he was inspired by the album Tusk when making this album.

Way Yes : Get Healed : Tog Pebbles (2013)
-          2nd full length.
-          One of the year’s releases I’m most excited for.
-          Debut full length, Walkability, was out in 2012 and featured the amazing track 'Important.'
-          If you like this band look up the Listening Party. Also reminiscent of mellower Yeasayer and Yellow Ostrich.
-          CMJ 2012

The Unknown & Unheard Show 258! Best Show In Months! Big Names Galore!

Guadalupe Plata - Lorena - Guadalupe Plata (2011)
-          Debut album.
-          Spanish band.
-          Incredibly enjoyable Black Keys/White Stripes feel here.

Black Keys – Run Right Back - El Camino (2011)
-          7th studio album already!
-          Their 5th & 6th albums had a much more polished sound to them, this track gives me some hope for the return of their early rough blues sounds.

Wooden Wand - Scorpion Glow - Briarwood Virgins (2011)
-          Latest single from this James Jackson Toth project's forthcoming album
-          Also released music as WAND after his band left him.
-          He conducted a pretty awesome fundraiser for this album. Check it out here!

Craig Finn – Honolulu Blues – Clear Heart Full Eyes (2012)
-          1st single of The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn’s solo debut. Out next January.
-          This seems to have a looser feel than most of what you get from the Hold Steady.

Okkervil River – Plan D - Golden Opportunities 2 (2011)
-          Free EP just released on their site.
-          These guys are a former best of the U & U top spot holder thanks to their album ‘The Stage Names’
-          Lyric-heavy deeply layered building folk rock.

The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band - Clap Your Hands - The Wages (2010)
-          5th album of 6.
-          From Brown County Indiana.

Scott H. Biram - Victory Song - Bad Ingredients (2011)

-          Texas one man band styled artist. I think I’m on a kick.
-          RIYL Seasick Steve,

Poor Boy's Soul - 54 Ways - Burn Down (2011)
-          2nd album
-          Trevor Jones led roots/folk rock that reminds me a bit of The Builders and the Butchers.

The Builders and the Butchers – Black Elevator - Dead Reckoning (2011)
-          3rd album
-          Tense energy can be felt through out their music.
-          Great live band!
-          I forgot about this album after the initial single was released. I apologize!

White Rabbits – Percussion Gun – It’s Frightening (2009)
-          2nd album.
-          Their debut album, had huge hype and acclaim.
-          I like this song better than anything I heard on their debut… promising start for what’s to come on the rest of the album.
-          Playing Radio Radio Dec 2nd

Ty Segall - Son of Sam - Singles 2007-2010 (2011)
-          Latest release. As the name would imply, it’s just a big collection of his recent singles.
-          Ty Segall has almost single-handedly revitalized the fuzzy garage rock genre.
-          Old White Stripes vibes here.

Coves - Let The Sun Go Down On Me Here (Demo) - Coves EP (2011)
-          Debut EP. Free to download from their BandCamp.

Smashing Pumpkins - Soma - Siamese Dream (1993)
-          2nd album.
-          This is the greatest Smashing Pumpkins’ song of all if you ask me.
-          Just did the deluxe re-issue of this and Gish (their debut).

Keaton Henson - Sarah Minor - Dear… (2011)
-          Latest Single from his full length debut.
-          Somber mellow indie folk.

Yellow Ostrich - 'Til I Disappear - The Mistress (2011)
-          Bonus track from their debut full length which has just been re-released with these tracks.
-          Sounds a bit like the Beatles and the White Stripes and even at times Menomena.
-          Very talented vocalist. Uses looping to deeply layer his music.
-          Played SXSW

The National – Mr. November - Alligator (2005)
-          3rd album
-          Latest was High Violet and was one of the best albums of 2010.
-          They also had a hand in the production of the ‘Dark Was The Night’ compilation.
-          This might be my favorite song by them.

The Unknown & Unheard Show 241!!!

Jim Ward - My Town - Quiet In the Valley, On the Shores of the Darkness (2011)
-          A compilation of 3 EPs, the last of which coincided with this release.
-          Former leader of At the Drive-In a great post punk band out of El Paso during the late 90's/early 00's.
-          This is about as far from that sound as you can get. Mellow, easy, mostly-acoustic alt country. Think Ryan Adams.

Mikal Cronin - Apathy - Mikal Cronin (2011)
-          Solo debut.
-          Album is produced by fellow west coaster, Ty Segall.
-          Also in a surf-punk band called the Moonhearts.

-          Lyric-heavy deeply layered building folk rock.

The Gregory Brothers - The Dress Look Nice On You - Seven Swans Re-Imagined (2011)
-          Sufjan Steven’s album covered for charity.

Roadside Graves - Double Feature - We Can Take Care of Ourselves (2011)
-          Forthcoming 4th album.
-          Very well received  3rd album.
-          Remind me a good deal of Lucero and their bar room style of rock/southern rock.

Carousels - Carousel - Carousels 4 (2011)
-          They have a sound that is part Jesus and Mary Chain, Pulp and a little
-          A must Google.
-          There is pretty much nothing out there about this band, however there is another band out there with the same name… different style.

Neon Indian - Fallout - Era Extrana (2011)
-          Forthcoming album out Sept 13th.
-          Brooding synth with a last dance at prom scene from a John Hughes film.
-          I really like it for as cheesy and out of place I feel it should be.
-          Kind of the same vibe as some of Justin Vernon's work. The quality of the end product transcends all else.

Bartin Memberg - Hammered Enamored - Sills EP (2011)
-          Debut EP
-          Slower, stripped back track from a set of songs that lean more towards dance/beat-driven pop.
-          Reminds me of Menomena and the Cold War Kids track Hospital Beds.
-          Stream his entire EP on his BandCamp and then set your own price for it!

Cold War Kids – Hospital Beds – Robbers & Cowards (2007)
-          debut full length album from this California band
-          3 eps prior to its release
-          played last years lollapalooza in Chicago this past summer and are supposed to have a great live show.

James Apollo - Happiness - Til Your Feet Bleed (2011)

-          Former leader of At the Drive-In a great post punk band out of El Paso during the late 90's/early 00's.

NewVillager - Lighthouse - NewVillager (2011)
-          One of a couple singles they have out.
-          No full length out yet.
-          Eclectic dance pop that makes me think of Yeasayer quite a bit.
-          'Rich Doors' was their first single out and a great track as well.

Moonface - Return to the Violence of the Ocean Floor - Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I'd Hoped (2011)
-          First full length. Debut EP was out last year and was one 20+ minute track.
