The Unknown & Unheard Show 144!!!

Stream & Download The U & U Show 144 Right Here, Right Now! (MediaFire) For those who missed my update: If you would like to get the U & U delivered directly to your computer in podcast form, enter this: http://feeds.feedburner.com/UnknownUnheard in your Itunes! Richard Swift - I Would Die 4 U - Prince cover... unreleased so far, but it's out there if you check this HypeMachine link - 'Lady Luck' is one of the best lo-fi tracks of the year... a year seriously dominated by lo-fi acts. (See: Black Lips, White Denim, King Khan & the BBQ Show, Almighty Defenders, Kurt Vile, James Jackson Toth... AKA WAND...) Official Site : MySpace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine Rain Machine – Free Ride – Rain Machine (2009) - solo debut from TV on the Radio’s Kyp Malone - this is this week’s song that will get you moving. Very funky sound to this one - I hope he can keep the energy up this successfully on the entire album. - Also in the band Iran - Out September 22nd Official Site : MySpace : Buy on Amazon Suckers - Roman Candles - DayTrotter Session (2009) - as of yet unreleased track - this might be the best sounding DayTrotter Session I've ever heard. - they have only released their self-titled debut EP and if it didn't have you craving more… this four song set on DayTrotter will. - They're a group of multi-instrumentalists and their wide ranging talent shows through clearly in their deeply layered, well-constructed progressions. Official Site : MySpace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine : DayTrotter Session Edward Sharpe - Come In Please - Up From Below (2009) - debut album… also on their debut EP, out earlier this year. - Big band that makes deeply layered songs - I never thought i'd play so many songs from this album, but it is really gaining more and more of my attention... give it some of yours if you haven't! - Sharpe’s vocals are reminiscent of the Kings of Leon - Arcade Fire + Margot & the Nuclear So & Sos? Even some Golden Animals! MySpace : Buy On Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine They Might Be Giants - Electric Car - Science (2009) - new children's album and DVD - This might be the catchiest track in memory. My only complaint is that i would enjoy it significantly more if they sang the entire way through, instead of the female vocalist - their signature nasally harmony in the chorus brands itself in your head. Official Site : MySpace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine Soulsavers – Sunrise – Sunrise/You Will Miss Me When I Burn (Single) (2009) - Single in support of 2nd Soulsavers album, ‘Revival’ - Mark Lanegan’s latest album since his insanely good album of duets with Isobel Campbell - This is a track not on the album. It is written by Lanegan, vocals by William Oldham. - ‘You Will Miss Me When I Burn’ is on the album and is written by Oldham with vocals by Lanegan. MySpace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine Cass McCombs - Lionkiller - Dropping the Writ (2007) - Iron & wine feels again, then add in a little Radiohead here - new album is just out, Catacombs Official Site : MySpace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine Kurt Vile - Hunchback - Childish Prodigy (2009) - forthcoming third album - told you about it last week, and i have a song from it this week - Love the album title. - This is a very psychedelic track with a big ominous riff throughout that the songs seems to center around more than the vocals. Like Ted Nugent’s ‘Stranglehold’ in that way. Official Site : MySpace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine Califone - Funeral Singers - All My Friends are Funeral Singers (2009) - this song is musically reminiscent of Modest Mouse - they have an expansive range of sounds. the slowly build with a restrained intensity. - you just wait for the song to errupt into something bigger, but it more often than not, holds back. - Playing Bloomington October 30th Official Site : MySpace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine Thao Nguyen & the Get Down Stay Downs - Know Better, Learn Faster - Know Better, Learn Faster (2009) - new album - if you are unfamiliar with Thao you need to correctly that quickly - Her last album, We Brave Bee Stings And All, was highlighted by the track 'Bag of Hammers." - Female M. Ward? Official Site : MySpace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine The Senors of Marseille - Davey - The Senors of Marseille EP (2009) - debut EP - Pop for sure, but not the standard, usually non-phenomenal brand you find all too often... this is interesting. - The piano heavy nature of this one make me think of Elton John - It's amazing how so much 'pop' music can be made that isn't discernable from all the other like it. Pop should stand out and stand up on its own. Official Site : MySpace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine Sonny Smith - Curtis on the Corner - Fruitvale (2006) - 4th solo album - Now releasing music with Sonny & the Sunsets Official Site : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine Akron/Family - Many Ghosts - Set 'Em Wild, Set 'Em Free (2009) - latest album - 'River' is this album's track that will get you in the door, but there are plenty of other highlights. - They have an enjoyably off-kilter, layered brand of folk. - Sufjan Stevens might be their closest musical relative... that's good lineage if you ask me!

The Unknown & Unheard Show 143

Stream & Download The U & U Show 143 Right Here, Right Now! Suckers - King of Snakes - DayTrotter Session (2009) - as of yet unreleased track - this might be the best sounding DayTrotter Session I've ever heard. - they have only released their self-titled debut EP and if it didn't have you craving more… this four song set on DayTrotter will. - They're a group of multi-instrumentalists and their wide ranging talent shows through clearly in their deeply layered, well-constructed progressions. Official Site : Myspace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine : DayTrotter Session Diamond Rings - All Yr Songs - Diamond Rings/PS I Love You 7" (2009) - debut release - Solo project from John O'Regan, the lead singer of the D'Urbervilles (they have a fantastic cover of Timber Timbre's 'Magic Arrow'!) - Reminds me a lot of the leading indie pop bands... Belle & Sebastian, Bishop Allen, Etc. - Don't watch the video for this song... Myspace : Stream on HypeMachine Langhorne Slim – Back To the Wild – Be Set Free (2009) - 3rd album… out September 29th - His self-titled second blew me away. - the best folk singer/songwriter out there for my money. Myspace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine Cass McCombs - The Executioner's Song - Catacombs (2009) - 4th album - fits in somewhere between mellow Beatles, Beach Boys and Iron & Wine - this one leans more towards Iron & Wine Official Site : Myspace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine Iron & Wine - Each Coming Night - Our Endless Numbered Days (2004) - 2nd album - spare folk arrangements and hushed vocals - one of the coolest artists to see live. Official Site : Myspace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine Songs: Ohia - John Henry Split My Heart - The Magnolia Electric Co (2003) - Just released 'Josephine' under the name Magnolia Electric Co - this is the signature sound I go to Jason Molina for. Josephine steps away from this, which is unfortunate… for me. Myspace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine Lucero - Smoke - 1372 Overton Park (2009) - New Lucero! - Ben Nichol's led band's first album on a major label - The level of polish has jumped significantly and it doesn't seem to fit with them - They have always seemed like the quintessential bar band, they hoarser and rougher their sound the better. - With that said, the polish can't disrupt the band's ability to write quality music. Official Site : Myspace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine Kurt Vile - Red Apples - God Is Saying This To You (2009) - 2nd album, 3rd out later this year (Childish Prodigy) - He has one of my favorite tracks of the year… 'Freeway' Official Site : Myspace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine The Mountain Goats – Matthew 25:21 - The Life of the World to Come (2009) - NEW MOUNTAIN GOATS! - If that alone is not worthy of a play, I don’t know what is - This seems to be some relative of a concept album based around lessons he’s learned. Each track’s title is a specific bible verse. Official Site : Myspace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine These United States – Everything Touches Everything - Everything Touches Everything (2009) - 3rd album in 3 yrs - Their debut was one that I immediately latched onto, but it took a re-release to drive up the following this band deserves. - Jesse Elliot, lead singer, writes some fantastic lyrics to go along with the layered Americana progressions. Official Site : Myspace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine Daniel Johnston - Freedom - Is And Always Was (2009) - quirky singer/songwriter with bipolar disorder - has a substantial cult following - gained fame from some early 90’s mtv play and more recently from the documentary ‘ The Devil & Daniel Johnston’ Official Site : Myspace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine Thomas Function - Belly of the Beast - In the Valley of Sickness (2009) - 2nd full length. Out October 13th - Fun southern rock'n roll Myspace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine Vandaveer – Beverly Cleary's 115th Dream – Divide & Conquer (2009) - 2nd album from this DC singer songwriter, Mark Charles Heidinger - He also has played bass for U & U favorite, These United States. - His voice is the standout element, but his rich compositions are a close second. - This track (and a few other tracks) feature some back-up female vocals that compliment the music nicely Official Site : Myspace : Buy on Amazon : Stream on HypeMachine
