The Unknown & Unheard Show 252!

Deer Tick - Main Street - Divine Providence (2011)
-          Forthcoming 4th album
-          The leader of Deer Tick, John McCauley, has been working on the Middle Brother collaborative project recently and making some brilliant music there.
-          This is their first new recording in about 2 years as their 3rd album was recorded during the sessions for their 2nd.
-          The is the first single from the forthcoming album and has an easier feel that is more reminiscent of Middle Brother than the older Deer Tick stuff.

Emperor X – Compressor Repair – Western Teleport (2011)
-          5th album.
-          Former HS science teacher.
-          RIYL: Mountain Goats & Death Cab for Cutie

First Aid Kit - The Lion's Roar - The Lion's Roar (2011)
-          2nd full length.
-          Swedish folk outfit.
-          They also have one EP out and a DayTrotter session well worth your time.

Brown Bird - Bilgewater - Salt For Salt (2011)
-          2nd of two EPs. Both out in 2011.
-          Layered, darker folk rock that is like a slightly less amped up version of the Builders and the Butchers.

Dan Mangan – About As Helpful As You Can Be Without Being Any Help At All – Oh Fortune (2011)
-          Third Album.
-          RIYL: David Dondero & Wooden Wand.
-          This one feels like a waltz.

Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin - Fame (David Bowie) – Castle Face Records Group Flex Sampler (2011)
-          Bowie cover from these fuzzy lovin' San Franciscans.
-          Ty Segall has almost single-handedly revitalized the fuzzy garage rock genre.

Turf War – Cheers To the Years – Years of Living Dangerously (2011)
-          Debut album
-          Produced by Ian St. Pe’ of the Black Lips.
-          Atlanta band.

Hanni El Khatib - Come Alive - When the Guns Come Out (2011)
-          If you love the old Black Keys you will get into this guy for sure!
-          Hard, dirty garage blue rock.

Mikal Cronin - Is It Alright - Mikal Cronin (2011)
-          Solo debut.
-          Album is produced by fellow west coaster, Ty Segall.
-          Also in a surf-punk band called the Moonhearts.

Benjy Ferree – Fear – Come Back To The Five And Dime Bobby Dee, Bobby Dee (2008)
-          2nd album
-          Concept album inspired by Bobby Driscoll, the boy who played Peter Pan for Disney in the 40’s & 50’s
-          After hearing a couple old time pop songs (‘Fear’) I wasn’t expecting to hear a track like this one… sounds like it could be found on a Raconteur’s record.
-          He’s getting comparisons to Jack White, Freddie Mercury and Marc Bolan… pretty accurate and pretty good company!

Matt Duncan - Meanstreak – Beacon EP (2010)
-          Debut 6 song EP
-          Retro pop that makes me think a lot of Benjy Ferree.

The Strange Boys - Doueh - Live Music (2011)
-          3rd full length.
-          debut full length was The Strange Boys & Girls Club out in 2009)
-          in the same vein as the Black Lips… lo-fi mash-up of 60’s/70’s rock, old r&b and punk.

Air Review - Low Wishes - America's Son EP (2011)
-          Debut EP
-          Dallas folk rock band
-          Cool Sufjan Stevens and Elliot Smith vibes on this track.

PAPA - Let's Make You Pregnant - A Good Woman Is Hard To Find EP (2011)
-          Led by the drummer for the band Girls.
-          Upbeat, a touch beachy and sun-drenched pop and a perfect fit for the end of summer.
-          There is something triumphant in their tracks that really draws me in.

Future Islands - Balance - On the Water
-          3rd full length.
-          This song has popped up in so many places, but I could never decide if I really liked it or not… I think I do.
-          Upbeat beach pop.
-          Baltimore band.

Carousels - Here To Me - Carousels EP (2011)
-          They have a sound that is part Jesus and Mary Chain, Pulp and a little
-          A must Google.
-          There is pretty much nothing out there about this band, however there is another band out there with the same name… different style.

Psychic Ills - Mind Daze – Hazed Dream (2011)
-          3rd full length, but numerous other EP and single releases.
-          Trippy garage psych rock.

The Unknown & Unheard Show 245!!!

Ryan Adams – Lucky Now - Ashes and Fire (2011)
-          Forthcoming album.
-          This is one of my all-time favorite artists and this is the first  song I've really enjoyed in a while. Hopes are high that he'll back off the big label polish.

We Are Augustines - Book of James - Rise Ye Sunken Ships (2011)

-          Consists of two remaining members of the band Pela, Billy McCarthy & Eric Sanderson.
-          Pela disbanded after McCarthy’s brother committed suicide.

The Hold Steady – Stevie Nix - Separation Sunday (200)
-          2nd album.
-          Big ass, borderline-punk, rocking anthems that will get you moving.
-          Possibly my top all-time live show.

Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks – Forever 28 – Mirror Traffic (2011)
-          5th album with the Jicks.
-          Leader of Pavement, one of the pioneering bands of independent music.
-          His fourth album, Real Emotional Trash is one of the best albums of the 2000's

Halloween, Alaska - Empire Waist - All Night the Calls Came In (2011)
-          3rd album
-          Indie rock along the lines of Pavement

Donkeys - Don't Know Who We Are - Born With Stripes (2011)
-          3rd full length.
-          Super catchy rolling track.
-          Makes me think of These United States.
-          Download a bunch of this music for free from their site!

The Duke and the King - Shine On You - Long Live the Duke and the King (2011)
-          3rd Album… kind of. This one is a US release that pulls from their two previously released import-only albums.
-          Mellow, easy folk on this track that makes me think a lot of some of T. Rex's softer acoustic stuff. Even something slightly fuzzy from Neil Young/Buffalo Springfield or Ben Harper

Wilco – A Shot In the Arm - Summerteeth (1999)
-          3rd album. 8th on its way in September.
-          Playing the Murat Theatre Sept 16th!

Blitzen Trapper – Might Find It Cheap - American Goldwing (2011)

St. Vincent - Cruel - Strange Mercy (2011)
-          2nd full length. Debut was out in 2009, Actor.
-          Was a member of Sufjan Steven's backing band along with My Brightest Diamond, arguably two of the biggest breakout female artists of the past couple years.

Young Circles - Jungle Habits - Jungle Habits (2011)
-          Debut full length. Also 1 EP out.
-          Extremely interesting blend of styles. Freak folk, harder alt-rock, electronic and beat driven.
-          I think they are at their best on heavier, more aggressive tracks like this.

The Stone Foxes - Serious People - Psycho 7" (2011)
-          Latest single.
-          2 full lengths out also. One in 2008 and one in 2010.

-          Norwegian indie power pop that makes me think of the Antlers and the Kissaway Trail.

Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson – Buriedfed – Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson (2008)
-          Debut album
-          TV on the Radio’s Kyp Malone and Grizzly Bear’s Christopher Bear continue to lend a hand to his work
-          His 2nd album was out in 2009, Sound of Fear.
-          Had a very hard life prior to these releases.

Ill Fits – Blood and Devotion (2011)
-          Brand new band led by U & U favorite Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson.
-          Also features members of MGMT, Amazing Baby and Foreign Islands
-          AND they’re apparently friends with Suckers! Can’t get much more cred than that background to start with.
-          Sounds more like Bowie that anything. Actually reminds me of Suckers, too.
