The U & U Show 403 | Record Store Day 2015 Preview



Night Beds : Tide Teeth (2015)
-          2nd recent single that continues their now more electronic approach.
-          'Me, Liquor and God', was released in Dec '14.
-          Beautiful debut LP was 2013's Country Sleep. Also one EP.
-          One of the danciest tracks the band has released.
-          Led by Winston Yellen.



Sufjan Stevens : Exploding Whale : Epic Fail 7" (2015)
-          Latest single released close enough to include it as a Record Store Day surprise.
-          Just released his 6th album, Carrie and Lowell.
-          It is widely regarded as his and the year's best so far.
-          One of the most talented musicians that I've been able to enjoy every step of the way.
-          This first teaser sounds like a hope-elevating return to his early stripped back folk days.

 

The Tallest Man On Earth : Dark Bird Is Home : Dark Bird Is Home (2015)
-          4th album.
-          Swedish singer/songwriter Kristian Matsson
-          Powerful voice and bringing in the fullness of a War On Drugs LP.
-          2008 self-titled debut was very well received.



Mikal Cronin : The Ballad of El Goodo (Big Star cover) (2015)
-          One of many sweet, spot on covers from Mikal and of Big Star.
-          Forthcoming 3rd album, MCIII, is due out May 5th.
-          One of the best songwriters going writing vintage beachy psych rock/pop.
-          Also in a surf-punk band called the Moonhearts & Ty Segall's backing band, just like Ty's in Mikal's band.



John Andrews & The Yawns : I'll Go To Your Funeral (If You Go To Mine) : Bit By The Fang (2015)
-          Debut LP.
-          Dylan-esque big band, steady-rolling, Americana-tinged, jangly classic rock.
-          Andrews is also Quilt's drummer and Woods' keyboardist.



Magnolia Electric Co. : It’s Made Me Cry : It’s Made Me Cry EP (2009)
-          One of my all-time favorite songs.
-          From his Record Store Day Release
-          Jason Molina's primary band. Also released solo music and as Songs: Ohia
-          Died in Indianapolis in March 2013 after years of alcoholism.
-          One of the greatest folk songwriters of the past 30 years.



Blitzen Trapper : Heart Of Gold : Live Harvest (2015)
-          A song for song live cover of Neil Young's masterpiece, Harvest.
-          Record Store Day release.
-          One of the longer running modern folk rock bands



Jessica Jalbert : Whatever Whoever : Brother Loyola (2011)
-          Solo debut album.
-          Started recording as Faith Healer since and their debut is one of 2015's best albums
-          This album is mellower and a little less late 60's VU-style rock than the Faith Healer LP.
-          Out of Edmonton.



Viet Cong : Oxygen Feed : Cassette EP (2013)
-          Debut 7 song EP
-          Self titled debut LP is one of the best albums of 2015
-          Made up from members of Women after a member died and they broke up.
-          Women was a highly acclaimed indie rock band.
-          Jagjaguwar label.
-          One of the best bands at SXSW 2015.



Twin Peaks : Got Your Money : In The Morning (In The Evening) / Got Your Money (2015)
-          Latest single for Record Store Day 2015
-          2nd full length, Wild Onion, was out in 2014.
-          Psych rock with an 80’s feel to it.
-          A highlight of SXSW 2015



Amen Dunes : I Know Myself (Montreal) : Cowboy Worship EP (2015)
-          Most recent release.
-          3rd full length, Love, was a great dark albums of 2014.
-          A different version of this song is on Love as well.
-          Significantly more approachable track from the usually more spacey, jammy, ambient dark rock band.



Two Sheds : Get It Out : Assembling (2015)
-          2nd full length. Debut was out in 2006.
-          Californian husband and wife duo.
-          Heavy slow-burning rock building into to big, but never completely erupting, swells.



Waxahatchee : Poison : Ivy Tripp (2015)
-          3rd full length.
-          Project from Kate Crutchfield. Twin sister of Swearin's Allison Crutchfield.
-          Her 2nd album, 2013's Cerulean Salt, was one of the year's best.
-          Debut was lo-fi and a rougher DIY style album.
-          Played a series of stripped back solo shows with only her twin sister, Allison of Swearin', on backup vocals at SXSW 2015.



Palma Violets : Danger In The Club : Danger In The Club (2015)
-          2nd album
-          Their 2013 debut was one of the years most highly regarded albums.
-          UK band that makes catchy, chugging anthem rock.
-          Highest energy band at SXSW 2015.



Metz : Spit You Out : II (2012)
-          Forthcoming 2nd LP.
-          One of the most aggressive, muscular sounds in the current music scene
-          One of the best bands at SXSW 2015.



Dead Gaze : Yuppies Are Flowers : Brain Holiday (2013)
-          Latest of full length after a long string of minor releases..
-          Very catchy-at-times, upbeat lo-fi garage pop.
-          Been a band that I've been wanting to re-explore since first hearing them while prepping for SXSW 2014.



Bop English : The Hardest Way : Constant Bop (2015)
-          Solo debut LP from White Demin's James Petralli.
-          Like the old, bouncy, fun White Denim albums.



Bravestation : Haven (2015)
-          First single from a forthcoming, unnamed EP.
-          Debut full length, Signs of the Civilized, was out in 2012.
-          RIYL Yeasayer.
