The U & U Show 400 | #SXSW 2015 Recap





Sufjan Stevens : Death With Dignity : Carrie and Lowell (2015)
-          I believe it's officially his forthcoming 6th album, but he's also but out numerous other compilations and releases from side projects.
-          One of the most talented musicians that I've been able to enjoy every step of the way.
-          This first teaser sounds like a hope-elevating return to his early stripped back folk days.



Waxahatchee : blue pt. ii : Cerulean Salt (2013)
-          2nd full length. 3rd is on its way.
-          Project from Kate Crutchfield.
-          Debut was lo-fi and a rougher DIY style album.
-          Played a series of stripped back solo shows with only her twin sister, Allison of Swearin', on backup vocals at SXSW 2015.

 

Thee Oh Sees : Toe Cutter - Thumb Buster : Floating Coffin (2013)
-          12th-ish album of 13-ish.
-          Putrifiers II, was one of 2012’s best and this was one of 2013's best.
-          One of the bands leading the west coast’s psych rock movement.
-          One of the best bands at SXSW 2015.



OnlyReal : Get It On : Days in the City EP (2013)
-          Debut EP
-          Also released 2 singles from forthcoming debut full length. Due out in 2015.
-          Vocalist over a blend of super catchy classic indie rock and electronic music.
-          23 yr old Niall Galvin bedroom project.
-          One of the best bands at SXSW 2015.



Metz : Headache (Live) : METZ (2012)
-          Debut LP. 2nd is on it's way.
-          This live version packs in even more energy… somehow.
-          One of the best bands at SXSW 2015.



Girl Band : You're A Dog : France 98 EP (2012)
-          Debut EP, France 98,is available for free on their BandCamp.
-          Their single, Lawman, is their best song to date and included on their forthcoming 'The Early Years EP'
-          Eractic punk rockers out of Ireland.
-          One of the more exciting and exhilarating punk rock bands I’ve heard in a long time.
-          Best Band of SXSW 2015!



Viet Cong : Continental Shelf : Viet Cong (2014)
-          One of the first singles off their debut.
-          Made up from members of Women after a member died and they broke up.
-          Women was a hightly acclaimed indie rock band.
-          Jagjaguwar label.
-          One of the best bands at SXSW 2015.



The Mystery Lights : Too Many Girls : At Home w/ The Mystery Lights EP (2014)
-          2nd EP. Also have one other 2014 EP.
-          Available for however much you want to pay on their BandCamp.
-          Dirty, fuzzy, blues psych rock.
-          Made me think a ton of Link Wray.
-          Best Band of CMJ 2014 & one of the best at SXSW 2015.



Will Butler : Take My Side : Policy (2015)
-          Solo debut.
-          Member of Arcade Fire and brother of their leader, Win Butler.
-          From this and several live videos it sounds like it's going to be a looser more rock heavy sounds compared to Arcade Fire.
-          One of the most pleasant surprises at SXSW 2015.



Courtney Barnett : Elevator Operator : Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit (2015)
-          Technically her debut LP.
-          Huge critical success with the re-release of her first two EPs, The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas.
-          One of the best bands at SXSW 2015 playing the new album in its entirety.



Moon Duo : Wilding : Shadow of the Sun (2015)
-          3rd LP
-          Features Ripley Johnson of Wooden Shjips and Sanae Yamada.
-          Another big surprise great set at SXSW 2015 and the best light show!



Leon Bridges : What Can I Do (2014)
-          One of his first two singles he released.
-          Raw vintage soul singer sound.
-          Very promising vintage soul and blues singer just getting started.
-          Signed to Columbia Records with only 2 songs out. Explains his extreme publicity.
-          One of the best bands at SXSW 2015.



Tobias Jesso Jr. : For You : Goon (2015)
-          Debut LP.
-          Produced by a Chet JR White of Girls and Patrick Carney of the Black Keys.
-          Only 2 other demos out via YouTube
-          RIYL Nilsson, early Perfume Genius, or early solo Christopher Owens.
-          Most unique show at SXSW 2015 as he conducted a piano lesson then played.



Black Linen : Mental : Black Linen/White Noise (2014)
-          Debut single.
-          Atlanta band with 60's British pop sound.
-          One of the best bands at SXSW 2015.



Twin Shadow : To The Top (Live Acoustic) : Eclipse (2015)
-          3rd album.
-          Led by George Lewis Jr.
-          2 excellent, highly acclaimed albums: Forget (2010) & Confess (2012)
-          One of the best bands at SXSW 2015.



Palma Violets : Step Up For The Cool Cats : 180 (2013)
-          Debut album
-          UK band that makes catchy, chugging anthem rock.
-          Highest energy band at SXSW 2015.
-          Had a guy that came out into the crowd and forced people to the front and to cance throughout the set.



Sheer Mag : Button Up : Button Up 7" (2015)
-          Latest single, also one EP.
-          Awesome blend of punk and catchy vintage rock and roll.
-          One of the best bands at SXSW 2015.



Big Star : Thirteen : #1 Record (1972)
-          Performed by Those Pretty Wrongs at Sx.
-          New project featuring Jody Stephens the drummer of Big Star.
-          One of the coolest single song performances of SXSW 2015.



Sarah Bethe Nelson : Every Other Sunday : Fast-Moving Clouds (2015)
-          Debut LP.
-          Slow-burning early-90's ballad in the vein of November Rain or Mazzy Star
-          Formerly the leader of Prairiedog.
-          Burger Records' departure from their usual style of artist.
-          One of the best bands at SXSW 2015.
