The U & U Show 347 | Winston's Back & Curtis Arrives

Night Beds : Head For the Hills (2014)
-          2nd album. 1st single.
-          Released one of the most gorgeous albums of 2013, Country Sleep.
-          Led by Winston Yellen.

Curtis Harding : Next Time (single) (2014)
-          Only the 2nd of two singles (and one was a VU cover)
-          Incredibly promising soul singer that’s readying one of the albums I’m most excited for.
-          Played with Cee-Lo and, currently, with members of the Black Lips in a band called Night Sun (also readying a debut EP)

Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks : J Smoov : Wig Out at Jagbags (2014)
-          6th album with the Jicks
-          Leader of the incredibly influential indie band Pavement.
-          2008’s Real Emotional Trash is one of my all-time favorite albums.

Kevin Drew : Good Sex : Darlings (2014)
-          2nd solo LP.
-          One of the most talented solo artists in the big group of Canadians that comprise Broken Social Scene.

James Vincent McMorrow : Gold : Post Tropical (2014)
-          2nd LP. One EP as well.
-          More R&B infused album than his previous work.
-          Slightly mellower style of folk that Bon Iver, but definitely some crossover.

Youth Lagoon : Worms : The Space Project (2014)
-          Trevor Powers’ contribution to a compilation featuring artists incorporating ‘space sounds’ in songs.
-          2013’s Wondrous Bughouse was one of the best albums of the year, as was his live show.
-          This project seems to fit his already spacey sound exceptionally well.

Zoo Brother : Fourth of July : Fourth Of July/Please Don't (single) (2014)
-          Only their 3rd minor release to date. One previous single and one EP.
-          Upbeat catchy shoegaze rock with a lot of found sound/samples.
-          Download for free on their BandCamp.

Cherry Glazerr : All My Friends : Haxel Princess (2014)
-          2nd LP
-          Debut LP, Papa Cremp, was out in 2013.
-          LA band of ladies with music similar to, but sloppier and more lackadaisical than Waxahatchee.

Quilt : Tired & Buttered : Held In Splendor (2014)
-          2nd full length album.
-          Late 60’s psych folk.rock.

Cardboard : Card : Cardboard EP (2013)
-          Debut EP
-          Vintage-sounding psych rock.

Nick Waterhouse : This Is A Game : Holly (2014)
-          1st single from 2nd full length.
-          Debut album, Time’s All Gone, was out in 2012.
-          Blues and soul singer songwriter.

Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside : They Told Me : Untamed Beast (2013)
-          3rd album.
-          Included on a ton 2013 best album lists.
-          This track also has a fantastic, disturbing, but pretty sexy video.

The Men : Pearly Gates : Tomorrow’s Hits (2014)
-          5th full length since 2010.
-          Hard working rock/punk rock band from NYC.

Speedy Ortiz : American Horror : Real Hair EP (2014)
-          3rd EP. 2 full lengths out as well.
-          Alt-indie rock. Almost like a more muscular guitar version of Waxahatchee.

Thee Oh Sees : Burning Spear (SonicYouth cover) : Singles Collection Vol 3 (2013)
-          A collection of tracks off singles and other minor releases.
-          Prolific San Fran garage psych from John Dwyer.
-          Their latest, Floating Coffin , is one of the best psych rock albums of the year.

Les Claypool's Duo De Twang : Wynona's Big Brown Beaver : Four Foot Shack (2014)
-          Primus’ leader’s new stripped back bass/guitar/vocals project.
-          This is a reworking of one of his classic Primus tracks.
-          He also recently played bass for Tom Waits in a rare performance.
-          SXSW 2014.
