The U & U Show 334 | Bill Callahan is a Warm Blanket

Willis Earl Beal : Wavering Lines : Nobody Knows (2013)
-       2nd full length.
-       Debut was lo-fi, unflattering and didn't show off his insanely powerful voice.
-       Big time comparisons to Tom Waits.

Bill Callahan : The Sing : Dream River (2013)
-       5th solo album.
-       His 4th, Apocalypse, was one of the best albums of 2011.
-       Former leader of Smog.
-       His voice has so much warm, fatherly power. Fall and Winter don’t stand a chance.

Diane Coffee : Hymn : My Friend Fish (2013)
-          Debut full length from Foxygen’s drummer Shaun Fleming.
-          The second member of the wildly vintage psych band to test the solo waters.

Volcano Choir : Dancepack : Repave (2013)
-       debut album was 2009's Unmap.
-       Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver) project with Collections of Colonies of Bees.
-       Bon Iver’s owned the 2008 music world

J Roddy Walston & the Business : Sweat Shock : Essential Tremors (2013)
-          6th album
-          2010 s/t album was excellent.
-          Baltimore band
-          Rock and roll feel to some of the tracks
-          Makes me think of Dr. Dog here.

Langhorne Slim & The Law : Animal (2013)
-          New single not attached to a forthcoming album.
-          Passionate and exciting live performer.

San Fermin : Deadalus (What We Have) : San Fermin (2013)
-          Debut album.
-          Layered, Sufjan Stevens styled folk.

Frightened Rabbit : Candlelit : Late March, Death March EP (2013)
-          EP titled after a song on their latest full length, Pedestrian Verve.
-          Midnight Organ Fight is their best to date.
-          Scottish accent stands out, but there seems to be something more than that to his vocals and make them truly unique.
-          The construct some of the most beautifully powerful and layered indie rock songs I've ever heard.

Gregory Alan Isakov : That Sea, The Gambler : That Sea, The Gambler (2007)
-          3rd album.
-          5th album is just out and excellent. It’s titled ‘The Weatherman’
-          More traditional-leaning folk singer-songwriter.

John McCauley : All Apologies (Nirvana cover) : Rollo & Grady Session (2011)
-          Solo set from Deer Tick’s leader.
-          They just performed a cover set as Nirvana cover band Deervana playing In Utero in its entirety to commemorate the album’s 20th anniversary.
-          Deer Tick’s 5th album, Negativity, is on its way out soon.
-          The leader of Deer Tick, John McCauley, has been working on the Middle Brother and Diamond Rugs collaborative projects recently and making some brilliant music there.

Swearin’ : Watered Down : Surfing Strange (2013)
-          2nd album. Out Nov 5th.
-          Pop punk band from Allison Crutchfield, twin sister of Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield.

Wymond Miles : Passion Plays : Cut Yourself Free (2013)
-          2nd full length album
-          Debut was a big critical hit at the end of 2012.
-          Guitarist from the Fresh & Onlys.
-          On the continually more impressive label, Sacred Bones.

Sleigh Bells : You Don't Get Me Twice : Bitter Rivals (2013)
-          3rd album. Out Oct 8.
-          Their 2nd album didn’t hold up to the crunching catchy bombast of their debut,
-          Still in a love or hate genre that is all their own.

Son Lux : Lost It To Trying : Lanterns (2013)
-          3rd full length.
-          Project led by Ryan Lott. Collaborator with Sufjan Stevens and Arcade Fire.

Twin Shadow : Old Love/New Love : Grand Theft Auto V OST (2013)
-          One of the many indie artists with contributions and radio stations on the new GTA V game.
-          2 full lengths out.
-          Band led by George Lewis Jr.
-          Part pop, part 80's synth rock, part dance and all wrapped up in Lewis' dynamic vocals.
