The Unknown & Unheard Show 155!

Langhorne Slim – Blow Your Mind – Be Set Free (2009) - 3rd album… out September 29th - His self-titled second blew me away. - the best folk singer/songwriter out there for my money. Myspace : Amazon : HypeMachine Ike Reilly - The War on the Terror and the Drugs (w/ Shooter Jennings) - Hard Luck Stories (2009) - 6th album… his 4th, We Belong To the Staggering Evening, might be his best. - Reilly is one artist that I think would be a blast to see live. His songs already sound like they were recorded in a rowdy, smoky bar (kind of like Lucero). - He always has top notch lyrics. Witty and funny and fits perfectly with the broad range of usually upbeat styles he plays. - After first listen it has a few solid tracks, but not quite as consistent as his previous work. Too much polish! (that is one of the biggest hurdles for me when it comes to liking an album) Official Site : MySpace : Amazon : HypeMachine BOAT - Lately - Setting the Paces (2009) - 3rd album - Indie Rock - RIYL: Stephen Malkmus and A.C. Newman - Seriously, the more I listen to this band the more surprised I am that Stephen Malkmus isn’t singing lead. Official Site : MySpace : Amazon : HypeMachine The Features - The Drawing Board - Some Kind of Salvation (2009) - 2nd full length - Debut out in 2004. Released two other EP's in there - Kings of Leon fans can definitely find something here. - Huge horns power this track along. Official Site : MySpace : Amazon : HypeMachine Local Natives – Sun Hands - Gorilla Manor (2009) - debut album - Check out their DayTrotter Session Here! Official Site : Myspace : HypeMachine Fleet Foxes – She Got Dressed – The Fleet Foxes EP (2006) - ACTUAL debut EP - Broke out early last year with their full length debut. - Lead singer, Robin Pecknold, is also pushing a solo project called White Antelope. Official Site : Myspace : Amazon : HypeMachine Chief - Mighty Proud - Mighty Proud (2009) - debut single out this year - has a feel of a different decade. - Like Cincy’s Buffalo Killers, these guys bring a slightly hazy psychedelic rock that would hold up against some of the late 60’s and 70’s originators of that sound. MySpace : Amazon : HypeMachine Heavy Trash – Bedevilment - Midnight Soul Serenade (2009) - forthcoming 3rd album from the Jon Spencer & Matt Verta Ray collaboration. - Jerry Lee Lewis rock & roll - Chuck berry/rockabilly/rocking blues Official Site : Myspace : Amazon : HypeMachine Digger Barnes - Everybody Run - Time Has Come (2009) - Full length debut - This track has a great, sadly too late for Halloween, dark feel of Tom Waits and/or Nick Cave. Ominous. - I love the artwork and packaging for this album Official Site : MySpace : Amazon : HypeMachine The Kissaway Trail - SDP - Sleep Mountain (2009/10) - forthcoming 2nd album - Massive anthem rock with an interesting bit of holiday bells. Official Site : MySpace : Amazon : HypeMachine Thao Nguyen & the Get Down Stay Downs - Goodbye, Good Luck - Know Better, Learn Faster (2009) - new album - if you are unfamiliar with Thao you need to correctly that quickly - Her last album, We Brave Bee Stings And All, was highlighted by the track 'Bag of Hammers." - Female M. Ward? + some Modest Mouse-y guitars Official Site : MySpace : Amazon : HypeMachine We All Have Hooks for Hands - Better to Live Than To Die - The Shape of Energy (2009) - 2nd album from the Sioux Falls, SD sextet - Big indie rock sound with vocals that sound like a less dreamy/more anthem rock version of Band of Horses’ Ben Bridwell Official Site : MySpace : Amazon : HypeMachine Animal Collective - What Would I Want? Sky - Fall Be Kind EP (2009) - follow up EP to Merriweather Post Pavilion, as album widely considered one of the year’s best. - This track expands on a sample from the Grateful Dead’s ‘Unbroken Chain’ - When it comes to the nerdiest of the nerdy in the music world, the more a band is ‘different for the sake of being different’ the better they are received and the more they are praised. This annoys me greatly, but these guys seems to always be experimenting without seeming like they are trying to do it to win over critics. - They have some quite approachable songs and they have some wildly different and potentially off-putting songs. This track is half of each and gives a great representation of what they offer. Official Site : MySpace : Amazon : HypeMachine
